Voice and Piano

The humbling, joyful discipline of starting music lessons as an adult.

I’ve always loved to sing (alone in my kitchen or driving in the car) but I’d never worked up the nerve to take lessons or perform in front of others. In 2017, I was craving a new creative outlet. I decided it was time to take the plunge into music.

I started voice lessons at Musicologie. My stomach was doing backflips walking into my first lesson. But my teacher set me at ease and we bonded over a shared love of folk music. I was hooked.

I ended up taking lessons for five years, eventually progressing to performing at recitals and taking up piano. I messed up a lot and learned to embrace a beginner’s mindset. I connected to my breath and body in new ways. I’ll never be a professional musician, but I discovered the joy of pursuing something new and challenging without the goal of ever achieving perfection.
